Research has shown that students often lose some of their reading fluency and comprehension as well as writing skills during the summer months.  Fremont Christian School continues its Summer Reading assignment for all secondary students entering grades 6-12.  This reading assignment is meant to provide practice so that students are able to retain and maintain their skills over the summer months.  It also provides them with an opportunity to start the school year with a shared reading experience.

For this year’s assignments, the faculty has created grade level reading lists for our students to select two novels to enjoy over the summer.  Instructions for note taking along with the writing prompt have been included with each grade level book list.  On the second day of school (August 15, 2017) students will be given the prompt to respond to with a short essay.  Please read the assignment carefully:  it provides information about what students will be allowed to use in writing their essays.  The finished essay will be recorded as a test in the grade book.

Choose two books from the list of the grade level you are entering in the fall.

Reading Rubric Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8
Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12
ELD Rubric ELD 2 ELD 3 ELD 4

If you will be enrolled in either AP English Language or AP English Literature, you only need to complete the AP English summer assignment.  AP English summer work will be emailed sometime around the middle of June.

Please work with your child very closely to choose his/her reading books for the summer.  We have included novels by Christian authors, by classic American and European authors, and have tried to include contemporary high interest literature, all of which are appropriate for high school and college preparedness.  While someone on staff has read all of these books, we recognize that not every parent would choose every book for their child (for example, some will have profanity).  Please read online reviews to inform your decision and consider your child’s maturity and ability to synthesize difficult concepts.  You may contact our Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Mrs. Romero, at tromero@fremontchristian.com if you need any assistance.

Regarding electronic readers (iPad, Kindle, Nook, etc.)

Both the Kindle and GoodNotes apps are free and allow you to highlight and write notes on the text.  There are other free and for-fee apps available as well.  You will be allowed to use your reader and electronic notes as references to write your essay in August as long as they are done on the text and not in a separate document on your device.
